  • When have you felt the Lord soften your heart so you could more willingly accept His direction and counsel?

  • What inspires you about Nephi’s response to the Lord’s command, found in 1 Nephi 3:7, 15–16? Is there anything you feel impressed to “go and do”?

Nephi and his family valued the words of the prophets. 24:21

  • How can your family members apply it to their lives as you study the Book of Mormon together this year?

CHAPTER 6
Nephi writes of the things of God—Nephi’s purpose is to persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham and be saved. About 600–592 B.C.

And now I, Nephi, do not give the genealogy of my fathers in athis part of my record; neither at any time shall I give it after upon these bplates which I am cwriting; for it is given in the record which has been kept by my dfather; wherefore, I do not write it in this work.
For it sufficeth me to say that we are descendants of aJoseph.
And it mattereth not to me that I am particular to give a full account of all the things of my father, for they cannot be written upon athese plates, for I desire the room that I may write of the things of God.
For the fulness of mine intent is that I may apersuade men to bcome unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved.
Wherefore, the things which are apleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world.
Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men.

  • What might you include in your family record?

Improving Our Teaching

Study the scriptures consistently. One key to meaningful teaching in the home is to create consistent learning opportunities for your family. President Thomas S. Monson taught, “Crash courses are not nearly so effective as the day-to-day reading and application of the scriptures in our lives” (“Be Your Best Self,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2009, 68).
